2018 MACKINAC ISLAND INTERNSHIP

Mackinac Island Town Crier

The Mackinac Island Town Crier internship is a unique opportunity for a hands-on, intensive

course in journalism. Students at the Town Crier are involved in every aspect of the newspaper.

Emphasis is on learning to write quickly and well and to involve oneself in the community.

Students who excel are those who approach the program as a valuable opportunity to expand their

learning beyond the university setting and who actively work to apply these lessons to improve

their work during the course of the summer.

The internship is 15 weeks long and priority will be given to students who can work one of the

following sets of dates: from Wednesday, May 16, to Wednesday, August 29 or from

Wednesday, May 9, to Wednesday, August 22. So that participating interns can commit all of

their energy and attention to the program, it is required that they not have other school or work

commitments taking place concurrently. The program is open to graduate and undergraduate

college students who are good writers and are interested in the relationship between a newspaper

and the community it serves.

Two interns are hired for the summer. They are paid and are provided a shared apartment. They

must supply their own bicycle and digital camera. They will work from an office on Mackinac

Island and be supported from the offices of The St. Ignace News on the mainland.

The Town Crier is published weekly for 18 consecutive weeks during the summers, from mid-

May to mid-September, and once in October, December, February, and April. Subscribers live

throughout the country.

Applications are being taken until Monday, February 5, and personal interviews with selected

candidates will be scheduled at The St. Ignace News office in St. Ignace during February and

early March.

Back issues of the Town Crier can be accessed free in the archive section of our website,
